{"id":436,"date":"2012-03-17T13:25:59","date_gmt":"2012-03-17T17:25:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sangamithra.wordpress.com\/?p=436"},"modified":"2012-03-17T13:25:59","modified_gmt":"2012-03-17T17:25:59","slug":"peter-cooper-and-mcsorleys-ale-house","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sangamithraiyer.com\/?p=436","title":{"rendered":"Peter Cooper and McSorley&#8217;s Ale House"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was recently reading sections of<em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Up-Old-Hotel-Joseph-Mitchell\/dp\/0679746315\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0Up In the Old Hotel<\/a><\/em>, which anthologized \u00a0Joseph Mitchell&#8217;s writings for the <em>New Yorker<\/em>. \u00a0It included a 1940 article on &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcsorleysnewyork.com\/\">McSorley&#8217;s Wonderful Saloon<\/a>&#8220;, where Peter Cooper frequented:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Mr. Cooper in his declining years, spent so many afternoons in the back room philosophizing with the workingmen that he was given a chair of his own; it was equipped with an inflated rubber cushion. (The chair is still there; each April 4th for a number of years after Mr. Cooper&#8217;s death, on April 4, 1883, it was draped with black cloth.) Also like other steadfast customers, Mr. Cooper had a pewter mug on which his name had been engraved with an icepick. He gave the saloon, a life-sized portrait of himself, which hangs over the mantel in the back room. It is an appropriate decoration, because, since the beginning of prohibition, McSorley&#8217;s has been the official saloon of Cooper Union students. Sometimes a sentimental student will stand beneath the portrait and drink a toast to Mr. Cooper.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>After <a href=\"http:\/\/sangamithra.wordpress.com\/2012\/03\/17\/a-visit-to-peter-coopers-grave-at-green-wood-cemetery\/\" target=\"_blank\">the visit to Peter Cooper&#8217;s Grave<\/a> on February 12, 2012, \u00a0some <a href=\"http:\/\/friendsofcooperunion.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Friends of Cooper Union<\/a>, gathered for a drink at this watering hole.
